What is Reformer Pilates?

What is the difference between Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates?

There can sometimes be a view that you have to do Mat before doing Reformer, or an instructor must be able to teach Mat Pilates. Mat Pilates is effective of course and it’s a personal preference. Reformer Pilates introduces you to adjustable resistance through the use of springs and the carriage to aid motion. In addition to this we will introduce accessories such as the ball, circle and weights. This method offers a broader range of exercises targeting specific muscle groups.

What is a Reformer bed?

First of all please don't be scared by the thought of using a Reformer. A Reformer can seem quite daunting with the springs, straps, moving carriage and accessories. The bed and exercise type can be adjusted for all level. Ask questions if unsure and trust the process. You are in good hands.

What can I expect in a class?

Each class will last 45 minutes, this will include a warm up, full body workout and cool down. The Reformer places a focus on slow, controlled movements. You won't need to speed through exercises, the approach will be slower but working our muscles. Workouts tend to be full body, so please expect to feel a bit of burn in your core, glutes and smaller muscles.

What should I wear to class?

Feeling comfortable is key as there is lot of stretching, pulling and pushing. Wear something that moves with you and isn't a hinderance. Opt for something that you feel good in but that you don't need to keep adjusting during class. During colder months it's normal to do the warm up with a hoodie or fleece on but after a few minutes it's likely to come off, so have something on underneath!

What to bring to class?

Gripper socks must be worn to class, if you don't have a pair you can purchase some at the studio. Please bring something to drink as sometimes it's thirsty work and we want you to stay hydrated.
